Diversity: Pilot initiative to tackle dementia launches in the Birmingham region

The Birmingham Insurance Institute was joined by the Insurance Charities and Alzheimer’s Society at their recent meeting, to hear about the launch of an exciting new partnership.

An innovative initiative is being piloted in the Birmingham region, and provides unique volunteering roles, that give the insurance industry the opportunity to give back to their local community.

Dementia is not the end, but it can make everyday things like going to the shops or making a cup of tea more challenging. Having someone with you can make all the difference and give someone the confidence to continue doing the things they love. Right now, there’s someone in your local community who could be a new friend to have coffee with, watch the football or try something new.

There are three different roles on offer:

  • Keeping in Touch telephone volunteer – Keeping in Touch calls are a vital way of providing continued support to people with dementia and their families and carers. Through short calls, you’ll support by checking in to see if someone requires further assistance on a regular basis.
  • Side by Side telephone volunteer – You can provide someone living with dementia with companionship and conversation. Through regular contact, people living with dementia can stay connected and are better informed of how and where to access services and support.
  • Side by Side face-to-face volunteer – This role enables people living with dementia to keep doing the things they love. You’ll help someone stay connected to their local community and build their confidence to stay active and engaged in social and recreational activities.

The two organisations have also created a dedicated service to support anyone in the industry affected by dementia – whether that’s for them or their loved one anywhere in the UK.

You can now access personalised support and advice to help you navigate the challenges of dementia. If you or a family member is currently being affected by dementia please contact The Insurance Charities Welfare Team on 020 7606 3763 in the first instance to establish how you can access support.
