Social media

Social Media has become one of the most powerful tools of the modern world because it shapes how people communicate, learn, and engage with society in real time. It allows your local institute to share news instantly, reach new audiences, and build communities around shared interests. Beyond connection, social media supports education, encourages collaboration, and plays a major role in how information is shared and consumed. In an increasingly digital age, social media is not just a platform for interaction—it is a driving force behind cultural, social, and economic change.

Social media is a low-cost communication channel that, when used effectively, allows you to quickly connect and engage with your key stakeholders or customers.

To be effective, your accounts and pages must be updated regularly (a minimum of once a week) with content that informs followers about key events and activities and encourages two-way communication.

Since January 2025, the Regional Membership Team has been posting at least once a week using content from The Journal and PFS Power to ensure all LinkedIn sites remain active. If your institute is not yet part of this project, please contact the team at linetwork@cii.co.uk to learn more.

Use your social media channels to promote your events and council activities.
Aim for a mixture of planned and spontaneous content to maintain regular engagement with users.
Build relationships with local and industry opinion leaders who can suggest or provide content.
Follow other accounts relevant to our profession to increase followers and strengthen professional links.

If you choose to use social media as a communication channel for your local institute, the Local Institute Social Media Toolkit provides clear guidance on posting on platforms such as LinkedIn and X. Please also refer to the self-filming guide if you wish to post videos promoting council activities on your social media pages.
